The Alabama Council AIA has launched a multi-media campaign designed to use advertisements and other promotional materials to educate the leaders of Alabama and improve their perception of AIA Architects. The need for managing the public image of the profession has been well documented by national survey research and by new local research which showed that although the Alabama leaders generally believed the involvement of an AIA Architects improves building safety, the public did not understand why. As long as political representatives, educational leaders, and code officials in Alabama are unaware of the rigorous training, certification and educational requirements that distinguish AIA Architects from other building professionals, the profession and the public are at risk. The most pressing example is the Interior Design Legislation. Once again, interior designers have introduced legislation which would allow them to practice architecture without the training it requires, which amounts to an unconscionable threat to the public health, safety and welfare. Counter balancing educational materials aimed at key leaders will appear throughout the legislative session, including advertisements promoting the unique training, certification and educational qualifications of AIA Architects. Look for upcoming advertisements in the following publications. Each publication is listed with the issue of the advertisement, the size of the ad, and the average circulation of the magazine or newspaper. As the Alabama Council takes the first step toward tackling this long-standing problem, support the effort by explaining what you do as an AIA Architect to protect the health, safety and welfare of the public. Make sure your representatives, school board members and municipal officers understand that AIA Architects are unique...are trained to protect the public...and are the one professional certified to keep public buildings safe in Alabama.
